Hair and Make-up 2011 - 2012

Hair and make-up 2011, 2012:
Stars and pre-show will have the same hair and make-up.
Hair: This is for Tinys, Minis, Express, Juniors, Seniors, Jr. hip hop and Sr. hip hop pre-show as well as Small Stars, Star Burst and Super Stars. Hair is to be “bumped” in the front and secured with bobby pins and/or a barrette that matches your hair color. Then ALL hair must be SLICKED back into a low ponytail. Hair in ponytail can be left straight. It is easiest to wet hair thoroughly, apply gel and/or hair spray to hair and comb back into low pony tail. After securing with a black pony tail holder, comb all fly-away hairs down and spray to hold well. Put bobby pins where needed so all hair stays back. If you dancers hair is too short to pull it all back, just pull the top section back into a mid-crown ponytail. If your costumes come with hair pieces, you will be instructed on how you are to wear them. Any head bands must be bobby pinned in place. Please make sure you bring some with you to competitions and performances.
Make-up: Make-up for our Tinys pre-show class is simple: they will only need a little blush and lip gloss. They are welcome to wear mascara, but it is not mandatory. The blush you will need is Cover Girl brand and the color is Plumberry Glow, #140. You can purchase it at any store that sells CG.
Make-up for Minis, Express, Juniors, Seniors, Jr. hip hop and Sr. hip hop pre-show as well as Small Stars, Star Burst and Super Stars: will consist of base to match skin tone, blush (will be provided, but if you would like to purchase your own, we are using Cover Girl brand in the color Plum Berry #140), eye shadow (white or cream base color, with dark purple for the accent color on your lower eye lid. We suggest: Cover Girl Purple Pop #455), mascara, black eye liner applied to bottom eye lids, false eye lashes (ALL dancers, except Tinys, MUST have false eye lashes), and lip stick (we will be using Maybelline Red Revival #645. ALL dancers will wear the same colors. We highly suggest you purchase your own lip stick, but we will have a few tubes of “community” lipstick if you choose not to purchase your own. We will be reapplying lipstick between dances, so it is easiest for you if you have your own, but it is not required. And for sanitary reasons, it is best to have your own and not share. You may want to pack Chap Stick. If your dancer has dry lips, lip stick will crack and not stick. Having some sort of lip balm to moisturize will help the lip stick last longer.) Hair needs to be 100% done and the majority of makeup needs to be done before arriving at competitions. If you would like to do your makeup at competition, you will need to arrive 20 – 30 minutes earlier than designated on the schedule. NO NAIL POLISH or toe nail polish! (If your dancer has acrylic nails, French tip is ok. No glitter toes.) THE BEST false eye lash adhesive I have found you can get at Walmart. It is Revlon brand and it’s called Precision Lash Adhesive. This really is the best eyelash glue.
The CREW boys hip hop: Hair will be how you would normally do it. NO Makeup! J
A few tips:
* NO jewelry, except our company rhinestone earrings! (If you did not order some, I have a few pairs left to purchase for $6. If you have your own “diamond” or rhinestone earrings, those will be fine. ALL Stars must wear the company earrings.) NO necklaces, bracelets, rings, or anything else (Unless it is part of your costumes. Some costumes may have head pieces, necklaces, or bracelets.)
* ONLY apply the listed colors for blush and lip stick. We will all be wearing the same colors of these items. If you are not comfortable sharing, please purchase your own items, but they must be the same colors. (Blush – Cover Girl Plum Berry #140: ALL dancers; Lip stick – Maybelline Red Revival #645: Minis, Express, Juniors, Seniors, Jr. hip hop, Sr. hip hop, Small Stars, Star Burst, Super Stars; Lip gloss – any color, Tinys.)
* Hair and most makeup need to be done before arriving to the competitions. Please bring extra bobby pins, makeup, curling iron and hair spray for touch ups. I suggest getting a separate makeup bag for your dance make up and keep it with their costumes. That way you will always have it and know where it is. You can just grab it and go when it is time.
* When getting dressed for competitions, you will need to put on your tights (NO underwear!), and then your warm-ups or blue jeans. If necessary wear the bra you will need and then your black “Diva” team shirt. If you don’t have a team shirt, any plain black shirt or tank top will work. Bring ALL your costumes and makeup with you and meet in the dressing room at the designated time.
* You may want to bring a blanket or pillow for your dancer. There can be long breaks between dances and awards so sometimes it is nice to have a something for them to lie down on. Also, a coloring book and crayons for the younger ones is great to have.
* NO eating or drinking in costumes!! They can get ruined and stained. They are NOT easily replaceable, and will be at extra cost to you to replace if they are ruined.
* Follow time schedules closely, even try to be 5 minutes early! It would be terrible if you missed your dance! Competitions do not wait for dancers. DO NOT be late!! Competitions can get ahead of schedule. To find out where our dressing room is, ask the admissions table when you come in and they can tell you where it is. I will send an time schedule 1 – 2 weeks before the competition so you know how to plan.
*ALL teacher assistants need to be there for the classes they help with too, not just their own dances. You will need to be in the dressing room with your class, unless you are performing, and then when you are done you will need to join us. Being with your class is part of your responsibility.
* We will need some parent helpers in the dressing rooms. If you are not available to help your dancer, there will be helpers there to assist. Also, often times we share our dressing room with other teams so space is limited. Please try not to bring younger children in the dressing room. Young boys and men are NOT allowed in the dressing room. Our boys’ team will have a separate place to dress. The fewer bodies in the dressing room, the better.
* If you have any questions, please find either me or Malerie Bourne. If you need to reach me the day of competition, please call me on my cell: 801-836-6167. Please note: I will be very busy the day of competitions and may not be available to answer the phone at all times. Please leave me a message and I will return your call as soon as I can. Or if you need a quicker answer, text message works too. Thanks!

March newsletter 2012

March 2012 newsletter:
·         We are quickly nearing the end of our season! As always, please read the newsletter…lots of important info. If you misplace it or need to re-read it, you can look it up online at www.divasdancestudio.com, there is a lot of important info coming your way concerning classed, extra practices, competitions and performances. Many times questions can be answered in the newsletter.
Attendance: There are only 8 weeks until our first competition (only 4 for Stars!) Attendance is crucial! Please be to every class as we are trying to finish our routines and get them clean and ready to go!
Tuition: Tuition is due this week, or by the 10th. Late fees will be added after the 10th. (Please make checks payable to Andrea Olsen.) Statements can be made available by emailing: dancerandylynn@gmail.com . Also, if your phone, address, or email has changed, please send changes to that email as well. I will be sending out competition schedules by email as I get it.
Fundraiser: Make sure all orders and money for the cookie dough fundraiser is turned in by March 9th. The checks for the individual orders need to be made out to a parent, and then 1 check is made out to me (Andrea Olsen). You can either turn the cash into me or include the cash in the check and keep the cash. Either way works fine. NO late orders will be accepted! All orders need to be picked up at the studio on Thursday, March 15th between 4 – 5 pm. If you can’t pick it up, please arrange for someone to pick it up. After your order is turned in, I will apply your profit to your account and will email out your remaining balance for your competition fees.
P.O.D.: Our next, and FINAL, parent observation day is April 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th.
Spring break: There will be NO class the week of April 9th – 13th. Enjoy a nice (and hopefully warmer) Spring Break! Don’t forget to practice!!
Utah Jazz Game: Our Stars Show Team has been invited to be the opening show for the Utah Jazz on April 26th! This is such an honor for our team and studio! If you would like to attend this Jazz game and support our studio, you can purchase discount tickets through me! Upper bowl tickets are $25/ticket (normally $45/ticket) and LOWER bowl tickets are only $66/ticket (lower bowl tickets normally START at $100+). You can purchase as many tickets as you would like. We need to achieve 100 ticket sales to make this happen. I will need your ticket orders and payment by April 6th. If you like to attend Jazz games, but feel they are expensive for regular ticket prices, this is a great way for your family to see the game! The Utah Jazz will be playing the Portland Trailblazers. Tip-off is at 6 pm, our dancers will perform at 5:30 pm. If you purchase a ticket through our promo, you get to arrive early (doors open for us at 4:30 pm) and you will get to watch the performance from the first 10 rows of the arena. After the performance, you will be directed to find the seat you purchased. Please let me know how many tickets you would like. When you purchase 5 tickets, you get the 6th FREE! If you have questions about this, please feel free to ask. You can email or call with your ticket purchase.
Competitions: I have the final dates of competitions:
* April 28th Maple Mountain High School. (Teams that are competing: Tiny’s, Mini’s, Express, Juniors, Seniors, Mamas, Jr. Diva’s hip hop, Sr. Diva’s hip hop, The CREW Jr. hip hop boys, The CREW Sr. hip hop boys, ALL Stars Teams. Times TBA)
* May 5th Payson High School. (Teams that are competing: Tiny’s, Mini’s, Express, Juniors, Seniors, Mamas, Jr. Diva’s hip hop, Sr. Diva’s hip hop, The CREW Jr. hip hop boys, The CREW Sr. hip hop boys, ALL Stars Teams. Times TBA)
* May (TBD): Spring recital (ALL teams and solos/trios are performing! Times TBA)
Please put these dates down on your calendar. I do not have times yet, but will post times on the website and email them out as soon as they become available, usually 1 – 2 weeks before the competition.
Costume accessories: If you cannot find your costume accessory list, it is up on the website, it is listed below as well. . If you would like it emailed to you, please let me know. ALL costume accessories need to be purchased by the first of April. If you ordered earrings, they will be with your costumes when they are sent home. Also, Stars costumes will be coming home next week (most likely) and pre-show classes will be another 4 weeks or so. Don’t panic, we have plenty of time. (Note: if you still owe on your costumes, you will not receive them until they are paid in full.)
Hair and make-up: We have specific hair and make-up styles for competitions. I will be holding a hair and make-up class. I will be going over exactly how to do their hair, make-up, false eyelashes (how to apply), what colors to use, and how to do their hair. This class will be held on March 7th from 8:00 – 8:30 pm. Stars and pre-show will have the same hair and make-up. It isn’t mandatory for pre-show (it IS mandatory for Stars), but it does show you easy ways to do hair and make-up. One parent should attend with the student. Combo classes do not need to attend, Nicole will sending home information about your hair and make-up. I will be sending home a detailed sheet that night. If you are not able to attend, I will send it home with the April newsletter, as well as posting it online.
Pictures: We will be doing studio pictures during regular class times the week of May 7 – 11th. They will be “glamour” shots. Hair does not have to be done in “competition” style. I would recommend make-up, but you don’t have to do the heavy “competition” make-up. Every student will take a picture, even if you aren’t ordering pictures. Megan Wintle will be doing our pictures again. We are delighted she is able to do them again. We will have order forms in the May newsletter, but we will also have some available at the studio for the day of pictures. Save the dates, and more info to follow in the April newsletter.
Competition fees, recital fees: All competition fees must be paid off by March 30th. Your recital fee is due with April tuition. Any and all fees not paid on time are subject to a 20% financing fee per week until paid in full.
Saturday practices and extra practices: Please be aware that we will be scheduling extra practices for Stars and pre-show to get ready for competitions! Please watch for dates, times and location! Practices will start this month sometime, and may vary from your original class times. These practices are mandatory. I will also need help from parents in our SHOW routine behind the backdrop for our pre-show dancers. There should be enough that no one has to do it all three times. Let’s give everyone a chance to watch the SHOW by volunteering to help out once. (It really is easy.)
Parent helpers: Thanks to those who have volunteered to be a team mom! If you would like to help, and haven’t been contacted yet, please contact Kate Jackson at 801-995-8081 or mjkjackson04@yahoo.com and she will give you more info!
Stadium of Fire: We once again have been invited to perform in the Stadium of Fire! This is such a wonderful experience for these dancers! Stadium of Fire (SOF) is an extra program that is open to dancers age 8 and up (age deadline is July 1st). There is a LOT that goes into this show. It is a major commitment! There are mandatory practices at the stadium; they are long and in the sun for the entire day. The cost to participate in the SOF will be $250. This includes: your monthly tuition for June, 2 – 3 practice outfits (exclusive only to those doing SOF), your costume and props for the show, a dvd of your performance in the show, and your field seat to watch the show after you perform. This caliber of show is not for everyone! Although it is open to ages 8 and up, not all dancers will be ready for the intensity of this show and its practices. Class will be held twice a week for 1 ½ hours each day, plus the mandatory practices at the field the few days before the show. The Stadium of Fire will be held on Wednesday, July 4th. I need to know if you are interested in participating. A $50 deposit will be due by March 16th in order to hold your spot. Within a few weeks of your deposit you will be given a code to pre-order your SOF tickets this year! They are doing this for committed parents only! Once you have put your deposit down, you are committed to it!! There will be NO refunds! If you would like to know more about this program, please feel free to ask me. As mentioned before, not all dancers will be ready and accepted to do this program. Please consider this carefully before making your decision. If you have not participated in SOF before, please talk with me about the commitment to see it if is right for you! The remainder of the money will not be due until May 18th.
Summer and fall classes: We are working on getting the schedule up for summer and next season. Summer classes run June and July (with August off), and fall classes start in September. Try-outs for the Stars team will be in August. ALL current members must try out each year. No one will be automatically placed on a team. Watch for the schedules soon.
Warm-ups, t-shirts, and duffle bags: You can still order your Diva’s swag! If you would like to see what we have, come on in and I would be happy to show you…We’ve got warm-ups for your dancer AND mom’s (great way to travel to and from competitions); t-shirts for all ages, dancers and the siblings of dancers to show support; cute v-neck tees or regular tees for moms; and even MEN’s tees so dad’s can show support too!! Come check them out! J Tees start at just $10 and go from there, warm-ups are $65 for the set, duffle bags are a great way to keep all your dancers stuff together and are just $40. We also have hanging costume bags for $35. Add names to the warm-ups or bags for just $5 per name. These are great to have for competitions!! Get your early to make sure we have the sizes you need. I will be taking an order to get names put on items the first week in April. This will be the final time I take things to get embroidery before competitions. Get your orders in before then if you want your name on anything. (If you have paid for your name and haven’t turned it in yet, I will need it by April 6th.) We have a few gently used items that are for sale at a lower price than new. If you are interested in these items, let me know. Also, if you have gently used items you would like to re-sale, let me know.

If you have any questions, please call, email or text me. Thanks!

Stars information: This section is more information for our Stars Show Team company members.
* IT’S A BOY! Miss Malerie will be having a boy! Congrats!
* Attendance: A few of our dancers are getting close to their tardy/absence limit. Please remember that after your 4th tardy or absence, you will be counseled. After one more, you will not be allowed to compete in our first competition, as per the contract. A few dancers are right on the 4 tardy/absence mark. Please watch your attendance, especially so close to our competitions.
* Proper dance wear: Please remember to wear proper dance attire to class. Technique days you can wear anything, but make sure it is appropriate and they you are able to dance and move in what you are wearing. Company days, Thursday’s, you MUST wear your red top with your black shorts with zebra trim. If you DO NOT wear your practice outfit on Thursday’s, or wear only a part of it, you will receive a tardy for each week that you don’t wear it. If you need a new practice outfit, you can purchase one for $25. You are welcome to wear your warm-ups while you are warming up, but you will need to take them off after, so make sure you have your correct clothing on. You are welcome to wear tights as well, but it is not required. You must also have proper footwear. Socks or tights only are NOT allowed.
* Try-outs for next season: We are still looking for a date for next seasons’ try-outs, but ALL current members must try out to be on next season’s teams. No one will have automatic placement. Try-outs will be in August, but not sure of the exact date yet. We should know soon. If you would not like to be on the Stars Team next season, and would like to do the pre-show, that is fine too. You do not need to try out for the pre-show, you can just register for them when registration opens.  We have strong dancers this year, and as we stay together and grow, your team will get stronger! I hope everyone comes out to try-outs for next season! Bring friends too! We may be adjusting days and times to accommodate those who are on dance teams for school and have after school practices. I know that has been a big scheduling conflict. I do my best to accommodate for school, young women’s, and many other activities. Please know that I cannot accommodate to everyone, but take days and times that work for the general population. Days and times will be changing for next season, as well as the teacher. (We will miss you, Malerie! She will be moving in the summer.) We will keep you aware of all changes that will be happening next season.
* Mandatory practice: At the request of your dancers, we will be holding another extra practice this month. It will be held on Saturday, March 3rd. Super Stars will be from 9 – 10 am, Star Burst will be from 10 – 11 am, and Small Stars will be from 11 am – noon. After we had our last extra Saturday practice, nearly all the dancers said they would like an extra practice to get ready for competitions coming up. All dancers MUST attend. We will be holding gym practices at the Old PG Rec Center on March 8th and 15th, see schedule for times and address. These will replace our regular Thursday classes and are mandatory.
* Hair and make-up class/costumes/Utah Jazz performance: March 7th from 8 – 8:30 we will be holding our hair and make-up class. I will be demonstrating our hair and make-up for competitions. I will send home a sheet detailing the colors and styles. Costumes will also be handed out that night, and earrings will be in the bag with your costumes. You will not receive your costumes if you have a balance on your costumes, or if you have not paid for your earrings yet. I will be sending out an email to those who still owe for costumes or earrings. We will also be going over our performance at the Utah Jazz game and answering any questions you might have. The game is on April 26th. I will have the permission slips that must be signed that you can fill out and sign that night as well. I would suggest bringing a pen and paper to write down any notes. All ticket orders and money is due by April 6th.
* Competition dates: Here are our competition dates:
                * March 24th: “Dance America” at Timpview High School in Provo. Times should be sent to me within the next few weeks.
                * April 28th: “Gotta Move Competition” at Maple Mountain High School in Spanish Fork. Time TBA
                * May 5th: “Utah Valley Dance” at Payson High School in Payson. Time TBA
                * May 18th: “America On Stage” at LAGOON! (We will NOT be taking our SHOW to Lagoon.) Time TBA
Competition fees are $205 for all 4 competitions. The due date for competition fees to be paid in full is March 30th. You are welcome to start making payments towards it, so it isn’t so much on the date. We will have the cookie dough fundraiser that can help pay for them. Once your order is turned in, I will apply your profit to your competition fees and notify you of your balance.
* Costume accessories: The costume accessory list is up on the website, as well as listed below. Please note that Super Stars now need black seamless fishnet tights for SHOW. As mentioned in the email, we have had to change our SHOW costume. We love the one we have picked to replace it and there will be no additional cost to you.
Let’s keep up the hard work!! I love watching the progress of these ladies! I am so proud of you and all the hard work you are putting in! This year, our first year, is going to be great! I can’t wait until competitions…only about 4 weeks!
